Canine Holiday Blogger Gift Exchange 2012!

After some mail confusion and patience, Nora received her care-package from the Canine & Kitty Holiday Blogger Gift Exchange!

Cat totally spoiled my pooch!  Her dog, Baxter, hooked us up with his favorite treat (and one of Nora’s favs as well): a Big Bite bone.  We affectionately call them biscuit bones, but I have no idea why!

Also in the mix were an abundance of holiday treats and a snowman toy!  While trying to get Nora to pose for the camera, Mr. Penny Lane came over to express his displeasure with being left out of the fun (and tried to steal a treat or two).

Canine & Kitty Holiday Blogger Exchange 2 CrowndVicI figured if Nora continued to hide from the camera, at least Pen might step up?  Don’t worry, I didn’t let him eat the dog treats.  But next year both cats (Penny Lane & Melonball) will participate, as I majorly scored some post-holiday sale items for next year’s swap!

And because I insist on subjecting my poor dog to the camera…

But when she doesn’t know you’re watching/stalking her with the camera…

See? Normal-ish dog pictures.

Also… She finally stopped hoarding the biscuit bone and began eating it.  As of yesterday (about a month after starting to chomp on it) she finished it, finally.
Shelter dogs are so weird, but wonderful.

Thanks, Cat, for the wonderful gifts!

PS: I got a new camera! By selling my Canon Rebel and with some holiday gift help, I upgraded to a Canon 60D and I love it.

I’m still in the learning curve, but can’t wait to share more pictures with you!

Kitty and Canine Holiday Blogger Gift Exchange!

Hannah & KJ are hosting their third annual Kitty & Canine Holiday Blogger Gift Exchange!!  This will be my first year participating, but I can already tell this will become an annual thing.  While I’m sure my three pets want some loot, I’m sticking to entering only Nora the dog this year.  What with having our house on the market & all that good other stuff going on, I figure I will keep it simple the first year.   But shhh, don’t tell the cats! You know how jealous cats can get…

So hop on over, read the rules (deadlines, etc) and sign up your lovely pets for this swap!!!

Weathering the Storm

NaBloPoMo_teaser

I grew up in Orlando, Florida, home of Mickey Mouse and humid heat. I grew up with rain, hurricanes, and power outages.  I’m no stranger to tracking a storm and preparing for the worst.

However DC knows more about snow than rain, and this was no snow-storm. The DC folk know this area barely prepares to deal with snow, either. ::coughSnowpacolypsecough::

Sunday afternoon we met with friends for a brunch which turned boozy once the official “school is canceled” email arrived.  Shortly after we headed to the grocery for essentials.  A quick piece of advice: if you are storm-shopping while tipsy, make a written list first. A paper list serves as a tangible item while getting distracted, oh candy, by every shiny, oh beer, thing. Even when waiting for a good half-hour-plus in line while one of us kept our spot and the other ran to grab random items, we still managed to forget eggs, flour, and bananas.

Monday proved wet, windy, and all around dreary.  We attempted to catch anything normal on cable TV, yet even our beloved Price is Right disappeared when more storm coverage replaced it.  We broke down before our satellite reception went out (which shockingly stayed solid the entire storm) and turned to DVR’d versions of “we’ll watch it one day” movies.

At some point we agreed the day off needed some work, and reluctantly tackled emails and graded papers. I even changed out of pajamas and into yoga pants and a (sports) bra.  Please worry not, as about two hours later I put my jammers back on for a true winner’s clothing cycle.

Thank goodness for helpful neighbors with stocked cabinets in our condo building.  No unscheduled day off is complete without homemade chocolate chip cookies.  See also: warm kitty cuddles and nail painting (separately, with ample nail drying time).  Divine.

Things I learned during the Super Storm/Franken-Storm/Hurricane Sandy/Post Tropical Cyclone:

  • Connecticut is right under Massachusetts and next to New York, not Vermont.
  • Bringing warm cookies to a neighbor makes for good bartering.
  • You can put a raincoat on a dog, but you can’t take the thunder-phobia out of it.
  • My car remains waterproof.
  • Dogs do not like to pee in 50 mph wind gusts.
  • Humans do not like 50 mph wind gusts.
  • “Sub Tropical” is a real thing.
  • DO NOT PACK AWAY YOUR BOARD GAMES WHEN YOUR HOUSE IS FOR SALE.  (all caps necessary)
  • Never leave your work computer at work.
  • Two people can create enough dirty dishes to fill a clean dishwasher in only two days home.

Once we found out Sandy gave us Tuesday off from work, the wine flowed freely.  Let’s be honest here, what else can you do after a certain amount of time inside?  Don’t answer that.

And through the entire storm my man remained by my side, not only because he wanted to, but because it’s awfully hard to leave on a business trip to go somewhere flooded.  While my heart aches for all those more gravely affected by the storm, I sure felt pleased to spend extra time with my husband. His eleven day work trip shortened to six days.  I can deal with six days apart (I think).

Sure the storm knocked every little last leaf from the trees, but it painted the sidewalk beautiful shades of fall.

We made it through safely and remain dry, for that I am thankful.

Our First Home

crownbutton

A little over four years ago, around the end of December, I decided our days of paying rent were over.  I wanted to not live with roommates anymore, I needed a place of our own, and I sought out an investment.  Mike agreed and around March we found and closed on our first home: a one bedroom, questionably 600 square foot (probably more), recently remodeled condo.

Sure, we will still only boyfriend and girlfriend, but we had dated for about 5 years at that point. We knew the other wasn’t going anywhere and more than willingly signed the deed to our place with two different last names.  Buggy before the cart? yes maybe, but I think where we are now proves the point we knew and were comfortable with what we were doing.

Sure, the one closet only fit Mike’s clothes and an IKEA trip provided extra storage right off the bat.  Our two cats ran their kitty-500 from the bedroom to living room back to the bedroom many times, in the absence of extra room.  Getting a (not tiny) dog probably didn’t help the space issue, but it helped with snuggles.  Then after our wedding we received “real” flatware, dishes, serving dishes, china, fancy pots, and a super vacuum along with other random kitchen accessories.  It became clear, quickly, we needed more leg-room, cat-room, storage, and extra breathing room.  We were probably silly to think this place could provide everything and more.  We’ve grown. We need more.

Over summer we hit our breaking point.  We rented a storage unit and all of a sudden SPACE appeared.  We painted where we always wished we had and beauty appeared.  Our first home finally became what we wish it always looked like, but will never really be for us (unless someone can give us another bedroom, an attic, and maybe a craft space?).

I will miss this building, with only 12 units allowing me to really know all my neighbors.  My neighbors take my dog out when a migraine hits, or watch the cats while we’re away.  We have happy hours together.  We watch out for each other.

I will miss this living room, where Mike and I curl up on the couch and watch TV, where friends come over to hang out, where our animals all coexist somewhat peacefully.

I will miss this kitchen where we baked cookies, made dinners, and cheers to good times.

I will miss our bedroom and having all my clothes in one place!

You can’t really “miss” a bathroom, but it’s been good to us, in whatever way a bathroom can do that…

For now I’m ready to stop vacuuming every day, in the event that buyer comes along.  I’m ready to stop wiping down the counters and making the bed every morning.  I wish putting on a sweater for the change in weather didn’t involve a drive to the storage unit to trade out shorts for pants and sleeves.

We’re ready for the next place, wherever that may be.  Someone PLEASE buy our first home. It’s been good to us, and I know it will be good to the next person/people!

This first week of July, in the summer of 2012, shall be known as “the week the sh*t hit the fan and then cleaned itself up nicely.”

Power outage at a wedding setup, water damage at home, hot as Hades temps + Mike got a job, independence celebrated with friends, and time well spent together = our future looks very bright.

This next week I’m taking a continuing education class to support renewing my teaching license, Mike starts his new job, and we find out if our floors need replacing.

A dull life we do not live.

What are you up to?

Peeaaa eeeS:  How cute were my animals this week?!

Linking up!
