My Grandpa was a carnival worker. This is only part of his amazing story and the giant heirloom that belongs to my family.
My Dad’s dad was an amazing person, I’m told. I did not know him personally, but I know many stories. One thing he really enjoyed, outside of being a volunteer fireman, was games of chance. He loved playing the odds so much that during the summers he worked at Rocky Glenn Amusement Park near Moosic, PA. My parents both tell fun stories of time at this park, running around with friends, eating junk food, and using what little spending money they had on rides & games.
But my grandpa, he ran the Guess Your Weight game. You know those men at the state fairs who yell out, “Step right up! Let me guess your weight! If I’m wrong you get a prize!” ?? And then you cringe because that sounds far from fun, but what are the chances he’s correct?
Yup, that was my Grandpa. He was that man who took a risk and guessed your weight, and 9 times out of 10 he was right! He was a “carni” at his finest. And he was really good at it.
And for as long as I can remember, my grandpa’s antique Guess Your Weight game lived in our house. The old wooden chair hung from the metal scale. That seemingly huge piece of trash holds so many memories. Oddly though, it seemed right at home for so man years on our enclosed back porch.
Thats why, when my dad’s monumental birthday rolled around and we had a “Big Top” theme, the Guess Your Weight chair & scale came out again.
I loved watching my dad celebrate his birthday surrounded by so many friends and family. Even more, I loved watching him do what he grew up watching his dad do — The Guess Your Weight Game.
Do I love men guessing my weight? Nope.
But do I love the thought of my dad and my dad’s dad having a fun time, getting others involved, and guessing others’ weights? You bet I do.
You bet.
