My Kindle’s Name is Katniss

Hello, my name is Vicki and I’m obsessed with The Hunger Games series.

And if I’m being honest here, I’m more into The Hunger Games than I led on with Twilight.

If I’m being super honest?  I loved Twilight, but not like I love The Hunger Games.

So what’s the hype all about?  Honestly I always found myself drawn to books about futuristic dystopian societies (ie: The Giver, Iron HeelFahrenheit 451;  and  Running Man is on my list to read).  This series takes the futuristic, fallen United States and sees it from younger, impressionable eyes.  Katniss’ fight to the death through the televised Hunger Games mimics much of viewers lust of reality TV these days, death aside (maybe?).  The focus on politics and how government runs a nation in need, and oversteps boundaries, intrigues me.  The heroine’s fiercely independent side makes her look far better than another leading lady in a young adult series ::cough cough Bella cough:: And let’s not forget the love triangle as Katniss “chooses” between Gale and Peeta.  Oh Peeta.

These Hunger Games, the unbalanced power of the Capitol, the poor people starving while others thrive, the feeling of loss.  All this could happen.  There is just so much I could say.

That idea that a young adult book drives me to think beyond surface value, really forces me deeper into these books.  Suzanne Collins weaves a stunning plot line with twists I honestly didn’t see coming.  And while I might still be slightly bitter at the ending of the series, I am still pleased that a book caused me to be angry, caused me to cry (the part with the cat!), and caused me to want to write this post and move on from Twilight.  (I think we can all rejoice on that last one, no?)

Sure, maybe Mike and I are jointly reading The Hunger Games Companion and continue our discussion by forcing the book on friends in the form on holiday presents…but one thing’s for sure — I can’t wait for the movie in March!

(And I love my Kindle.  Best multipurpose toy ever.)

So, those of you not under a rock:

  1. Gale or Peeta??
  2. Were you satisfied with the ending?
  3. Can you believe they are written for 12+ ??  or does that make sense?

And, may the odds be ever in your favor…

Oh excellent! I read them all within a month’s time.such an easy read!

I finished this series in 4 days. One a day except I had to take a break on the last one and actually run errands, so really 3 in 3 days.
I loved them! I hoped she’d end up with peeta the whole time! I love Gale too but come on…. it’s Peeta! He’s been in love with her since they were kids!
I was actually satisfied with the ending. I was afraid I wouldn’t be because I’d heard so many people weren’t, but I think it ended in a good way.
And NO WAY these are made for a bunch of 12yr olds?! Wow… I’m not sure how I feel about that. Ha.

So… I’m one of the ones living under a rock. But with generous purpose! My sister wanted to read them, but she’s a poor college student and all that… So I bought them on my Nook account and lent them to her to read first. She loves them! Hoping to start reading them soon! :)

That is very sweet of you! :) Your sis told me her nook’s name is Peeta. So we’re getting our e-readers together, naturally. We’ll be grandmas to baby books. Yes I really just wrote that.

:) Just saw this comment and it made my day! ;) I’ve finished book one and about a quarter of the way into book two… I’ll have to think up a good name for my reader now since the two best were taken… :)

Love Love Love. I read the first two and then had to WAIT for the third which was pretty much the worst thing ever. I was all about Peeta – love him and loved that Gale was presented as a likeable character but not the best choice for our heroine in really subtle ways. I liked the ending – it was a while ago so I can’t really remember but the ending made me cry – a lot. And I remember liking it.
AND yes, I can believe it is written for 12+ – reasons include, let’s let kids read things that make them think not just fantasy vampire books (sorry I know you love the twilight), maybe if they read about these kinds of things and it can be related to real things that go on in the world we’ll raise a generation that will change the world (like get rid of reality television!), and c’mon these are great books and if you want kids to like reading – give them something that’s exciting and creative!
Glad you loved them – Canadian author ‘eh!

Loved them. I made Aaron read them and he’s not much of a reader and he devoured them. Loved The Giver too.
My oldest two loved them as well. (15 and 14)
Another one you’d love is Famished. I blogged about it awhile back- and my husband loved it too :)

Looking for your next fix? Try Divergent. But you might want to wait until after the whole trilogy comes out (unlike me, who is IMPATIENTLY waiting for the next in the series….)

Oh, good to know! I have yet to hear of those and will look into them!
